How Do You Know Which Is the Best Mobile Phone For You?
There are so many different models of mobile phones available on the market, but how does one go about selecting the best mobile phone to suit their needs? A mobile phone is relatively expensive and there are several factors you need to consider before you decide on the model that’s just right for you.
Modern mobile handsets can be used for a lot more than just making phone calls. All models now include cameras and music players by default and except for the most basic models all of them can also access the Internet and provide email sending and receiving capabilities.
There are some features you need to look at before you pick the best mobile phone that is just right for your needs. Decide on which features you absolutely need and which ones you don’t, and pick the models accordingly. Also remember that all the features you could possibly want a phone will most likely not be present in any one model. For example, there are certain models of business phones that are fantastic for business users, but score very low on the entertainment front.
If you are looking for a new phone, you might also come across the term ‘smart phone’. These devices, as may be very obvious from the name itself, are able to perform a huge variety of communication and multimedia tasks, and are now starting to resemble mini computers rather than phones. Almost all models of smart phones allow you to play games, record video, take pictures, check email, browse the Internet, use productivity applications and view maps and access GPS features. Nevertheless, if all you need to do is make voice calls and send text messages, it would probably not be worth it to buy a high-range smart phone. But if you are intrigued by them, and have the money to spare, it might be worth researching their different features and you might want to fork out the cash for a smart phone if you hadn’t considered one before.
On the other end of the spectrum, you may find budget phones. These would be the best mobile phones if all you have to do is make phone calls and send text messages. Several of them also include very basic cameras and barebones Internet functionality.
You must also look and compare the following features before finalizing your decision regarding which mobile phone would be right for you.
1. Call quality: If a mobile phone is unable to make calls, it would be of no use. But it is not necessary that an expensive phone will feature good call quality. In fact, quite often the inverse is actually true. When you are evaluating phones, you must make a couple test calls to determine call quality. Pay attention to static or tinny voices, and find out from the person you are speaking to if they can hear any noise in the background.
2. Design and Ergonomics: A wide variety of design options are available and you need to pick the design that works for you. Your choices include large touch screens, QWERTY keyboards and sliders. No matter which kind of phone you ultimately choose, check how it feels against your ear. Can you use it with a single hand? Is it too big? Will it fit in your pocket?
3. Operating system: If you aim to do more than send texts or make phone calls, you also need to look at the platform on which your mobile phone is running, since this greatly affects what you can do. Every platform has its own advantages and disadvantages, and you need to make sure you pick the right one for your needs.
4. Display: The size of the display you settle for also depends on what you want to end up doing with it. If you intend to stream movies or perform multimedia functionality, or even edit office documents using your phone, you need to make sure that you invest in a phone that has a screen that is big enough to accommodate your needs. Also look at the screen’s resolution. The higher it is, the better results you will get if you intend to take pictures or videos with your phone.
5. Ability to adjust backlight and contrast: This not only has important implications for readability and your ability to view graphics on your screen, it can also help you to get more life out of your battery.
6. 4G support: 4G offers significantly improved download speeds allowing you to take advantage of Internet streaming and videoconferencing and play games over networks. However, you might want to check the coverage offered by your network operator before you buy a 4G enabled phone. Not many carriers support it and buying a 4G enabled phone when your network does not support it would be a waste of money.
7. Cameras: You should carefully inspect the specifications of the camera included in your phone if you are interested in taking a lot of pictures. Many midrange phones now include a standard 5 megapixel camera, but 8 or 12 megapixel cameras are not uncommon either. You must remember however that more megapixels do not necessarily mean that you will get a better result from your camera. Confirm that there is a flash, and try to snap some pictures so that you have an idea of the photo quality that you can expect from your camera.
8. Video camera: If your cell phone has a camera, it is also most likely that it has video capture capabilities as well. Many phones are able to take high definition videos. If you want to snap videos, check that the operating system you have allows you to easily upload your videos to your sharing networks.
9. Processor speed: As is the case in computers, processing speed is important if you are interested in playing games or intend to use a lot of apps at the same time, but for the average user, top notch processor speed isn’t really a requirement. For hassle free performance, there are several other factors that will do the trick just as well, including the version of software you are using.
10. Battery life: in general there is no way that you can predict how much battery life that you will get out of your phone. Smart phones typically have a much shorter battery life, but the general rule of thumb is that the heavier the usage, the shorter will be the life of your battery.
